An iconic Queensland product, born out of 3,000 hours of creator “Doug” Thorley getting bitten by mosquitoes in paddocks, continued to win accolades 57 years after it was first made.
RID Medicated Plus Repellent, based on the a formula Mr Thorley created after years of sacrificing his own body in “field” experiments, was named Australia’s most effective against mosquito bites by consumer group CHOICE.
RID Directors David Griffin and Natalene Carter, who bought the business earlier this year along with a third party, were “immensely proud” that the product continued to tick consumer boxes.
“Natalene and I saw the opportunity to acquire the brand in May. Considering it’s 57-year history and the quality of the product, we decided to make the acquisition,” Mr Griffin said.
He said the product continued to be 100 per cent Australian-owned and was manufactured in Brisbane.
“There’s always the pressure to move manufacturing offshore, but for the foreseeable future, we’ll keep it here. Our administration and marketing is in Townsville, where Natalene lives. I live in Brisbane.” Mr Griffin said.
“In 2014 we’re looking to stretch the brand into other areas and looking at making it more accessible to the younger generation.”
